Course Description:

We regularly read books to young children. However, shared book reading as a strategy for developing the communication skills of young children with communication delays involves much more than simply reading a book. This course will provide evidence-based information on shared book reading and offer practical strategies for planning and implementing effective shared book reading experiences.

By the end of the course, you will have the knowledge to:

  • Reflect on the setting and make adjustments where necessary to minimise distractions and prompt engagement in shared book reading experiences.
  • Select appropriate books to be used in shared book reading experiences.
  • Use a range of strategies to extend engagement and prompt joint attention.
  • Use a range of strategies to extend children’s utterances, vocabulary, and conversational turns.
  • Plan individual shared book reading experiences to support the language and communication development of a range of young learners.
